Florida House on Capitol Hill is the State Embassy of Florida that connects, celebrates and champions Florida to the world. As the only State Embassy in Washington, D.C., Florida House stands strong as a non-partisan, 501c3 non-profit organization on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., just behind the U.S. Supreme Court. Founded in 1973 by Rhea Chiles as a “home away from home for Floridians”, Florida House takes no money from the State of Florida and is supported by donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. Events and Operations Manager

Florida House is seeking an Events and Operations Manager to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Events and Operations Manager will be responsible for meeting specific fundraising and financial goals to ensure the immediate and long-term viability of Florida House; oversees all aspects of House Rentals with external groups; organizes all DC Events hosted by Florida House; manages maintenance projects; and supports the Executive Director in the execution of his/her duties including financial efforts. This position is full-time, 40 hours per week on-site in our beautiful historic row house on Capitol Hill, and can have a flexible schedule that requires some evening work with occasional travel and weekend work.

What You’ll Do

Manage all Aspects of House Rentals

  • Meet annual revenue goal for House Rentals
  • Manage all House Rental Events including scheduling, contracts, and day-of event logistics
  • Market Florida House as a rental space to potential renters
  • Complete set-up and take-down of Florida House items during events when the Maintenance & Hospitality Coordinator is unavailable
  • Maintain and update vendor list to ensure all vendors are meeting expectations and renter needs
  • Work with Executive Director to find opportunities for engagement with renters

Organize All DC Events Hosted by Florida House

  • Meet annual revenue goal for Special Events in partnership with Chief Development Officer
  • Manage all expenses for Special Events and work within budget
  • Create and execute DC-based Special Events as fundraisers at Florida House
  • Manage on-site logistics for D.C. based annual Trustee meeting with input from Chief Development Officer
  • Oversee events at Florida House in conjunction with rotating exhibits
  • Manage logistics for Florida House hosted events for partners and the Florida Congressional Delegation and staff
  • Support the DC Trustee Chapter in recruitment, fundraising events, and engagement
  • Work within budgeted expenses for Special Events

Oversee Facilities and Building Maintenance

  • Meet annual revenue goals, including outreach and follow up, for Rhea Chiles Building Fund
  • Manage following expense categories (including tracking expenses and receipts):
    • Building Maintenance
    • Utilities
    • Rhea Chiles Building Fund
  • Oversee all major capital improvement projects at Florida House
  • Work with Maintenance & Hospitality Coordinator to ensure all regular maintenance work is being completed
  • Serve as Staff Liaison to House Operations Committee
  • Maintain good relationships with neighbors and community groups

General Operational Work

  • Conduct tours of Florida House for visitors when needed
  • Help identify and support opportunities in Washington, D.C. for Executive Director to connect with potential supporters
  • Review monthly financial statements to ensure assigned revenue and expense categories are correct
  • Provide audit support by keeping up to date records of receipts and pulling together information needed for our annual audit
  • Maintain the organization in a positive financial position by operating within approved budget
  • Effectively communicate our vision, mission, and strategy to Trustees and partners
  • Provide accurate and timely information to Trustees so that they can function properly and make informed decisions
  • Use Time management principles
  • Other duties as assigned by Executive Director

What We’re Looking For

  • Creative | Collaborative I Enthusiastic | People Person
  • College degree or applicable professional experience
  • 2-4 years experience in special events, fundraising, or comparable business experience
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite, database management, and other computer skills as required.
  • Professional, resourceful, collaborative, and organized worker. Ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills (verbal & written)
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to use creative thinking to problem solve and advertise the brand.
  • Ability to negotiate contracts and work with outside vendors for positive results.
  • Honesty, integrity, passion for hard work and success. Provide outstanding customer service to all guests and visitors.
  • Familiarity with marketing and promotional strategies.
  • Direct, support & setup for special events & activities including able to lift up to up to 15 pounds and stand for long periods of time.
  • Flexibility for extended hours, including nights and some weekends.
  • Candidate must be local to Washington, D.C. , or willing to relocate to the DMV area
  • Passion for Florida is a must – having direct Florida ties is even better!

Compensation ranges from $53,000 – 58,000 annually with the following benefits:
